Season’s Greetings and Happy New Year to all!
As a member of your volunteer fire department Board of Directors, I would like to wish
each and every one of you a safe, healthy, and prosperous New Year!
Before going forward to the year 2025, here’s a recap of 2024.
The BonFire grant was an incredible project that gives us protection against fires
encroaching on the bay. The commitment to keeping the brush under control going forward should be a priority for all of us. Take time next year to walk the perimeter and see what a great job was done. Doug, Jim, Bernie and Claudia have done a great job of working with the department and Jim and Bernie purchased an excavator with a masticator implement to keep the brush under control.
One of the 2024 goals was to purchase permanent piping and place it up the draw to
the water standpipe in the meadow. This was achieved and installed. This allows us to create a water curtain (sprinkler system) that is 600 feet long at the present time with possible expansion in the future. The standpipe will also allow us to fill trucks at this site instead of having to drive down to the lake to fill.
This fall the department acquired two (2) serviceable water reservoir tanks. This
will allow the strike team in Pine Cove to have an available water source right on site. The
goal is to finish the project in 2025. We will also be setting up a defensible sprinkler
system behind the cabins in the Kilroy Bay area.
Another goal achieved last summer was clearing the brush and fire fuels behind the
Shields Cabin to the meadow. Thanks to all members of the work party who had a hand in this. They made short work of it and then enjoyed a barbeque at the pizza oven. Thanks to everyone who contributed labor and food! We have now set our other beach pump in front of Shield’s cabin and hope to have everything operational next summer with piping for additional sprinklers and water features.
Looking forward to 2025, the VFD board is continuing to look for grant monies to
build a structure to safely keep our trucks, equipment and inventory out of the weather.
Your sincere willingness to donate every year in our fundraising drive is the catalyst that
keeps the department humming along. Thank you all!
Early this spring a work party will be extending the inflow pipe for the beach pump.
I know, I told you that this would happen last year. Well, it did, but we did not get it deep
enough so we will relocate it again this spring.
I wish you all a healthy, safe and happy New Year!! Hope to see you all next spring.
Tim Martin
